Rescuers Nepal arm

Rescuers Nepal arm Rescuers in Nepal said Thursday they hold out little hope of finding any survivors after a passenger plane crashed in a remote mountainous area with 22 people on board, including one American. The Twin Otter plane smashed into a mountainside shortly after taking off from a small airstrip in eastern Nepal bound for the capital Kathmandu, 140 kilometres (90 miles) to the west. The cause of the crash is not yet known. An army rescue team has reached the crash site after it was located in an aerial search early Thursday, but authorities said there was little chance any of the 19 passengers and three crew would be found alive."The plane that went missing on Wednesday has been found crashed into a hillside in eastern Nepal," Dimlesh Lal Karna, head of the rescue operation, told AFP."The aircraft smashed into pieces on impact and there are unlikely to be any survivors." The airline, Tara Air, has said one of the passengers is an American citizen, although the US embassy was not immediately able to confirm this.

The others were initially said to be Nepalese, but reports Thursday suggested they may be Bhutanese pilgrims who claimed to be locals to qualify for a cheaper air fare. Khotang, the district in eastern Nepal the plane took off from, is not a major tourist destination, but it is home
to two sites of religious significance, a Hindu temple and a Buddhist monastery.Air travel is popular in impoverished Nepal, which has only a very limited road network. Many communities, particularly in the mountains and hills, are accessible only on foot or by air. Aviation accidents are relatively common, particularly during the summer monsoon, when visibility is usually at its worst.

Last month a helicopter crashed near Mount Everest during a mission to rescue two stranded climbers, killing the pilot and an engineer. In August, a plane headed for the Everest region crashed in bad weather killing all 14 people on board, including four Americans, a Japanese and a British national. An investigation blamed the crash on a power failure. It said the plane's generator failed and the pilot did not follow the proper procedures to conserve the remaining battery power. Tara Air is a subsidiary of Yeti Airlines, a privately owned domestic airline founded in 1998 which runs a service to many far-flung destinations across Nepal.
Yeti's last major accident was in 2008 when a passenger plane crashed on landing at Lukla airport, the gateway to Mount Everest, killing all 19 people on board, most of them German tourists.

K.P. Nepal's ex-crown prince charged after gunshot allegations
-46/hours ago

KATHMANDU — Nepal's former crown prince was charged Thursday with disturbing the peace, the state prosecutor said, after a late-night drunken argument in which he allegedly fired his gun in the air. Paras Shah, 38, was arrested on Tuesday after arguing with fellow guests at an upmarket resort about the role of the deposed monarchy. The home ministry had said he would be charged with illegal possession of a firearm, but he will now face the lesser charge of disturbing the peace. If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of two years in jail and a 10,000-rupee (140-dollar) fine. One of the guests involved in Saturday night's dispute, Rubel Chaudhary, the Bangladeshi son-in-law of Nepal's deputy prime minister, said Shah threatened to kill him and his family.

"He has been released after he deposited 10,000 rupees as bail," district attorney Gita Prasad Timalsina told AFP. "He has been ordered to present himself to the district administration office on March 3, 2011." Shah became heir to the throne in 2001 after his cousin, former crown prince Dipendra, murdered nine members of his family including the king and queen in a drink-and-drugs-fuelled rampage before apparently turning his gun on himself. He moved to Singapore with his wife and two children after parliament voted in 2008 to abolish the monarchy, but has since returned to Nepal. The arrest of Shah, who as heir to the throne was notorious for his playboy lifestyle, caused shock in a country where the king was once revered as the reincarnation of a Hindu god, and the royal family seen as above the law. Supporters of the royals held demonstrations demanding his release, but many other Nepalese welcomed what they saw as a overdue move to bring to justice a man who as crown prince enjoyed immunity from the law. Shah was accused 10 years ago of killing a popular Nepalese musician in a suspected drunk-driving incident outside the royal palace. Mass street demonstrations called for him to be punished, but no charges were ever brought against him and an army officer later claimed responsibility for the incident.

Rubel

Rubel Over the last two days, a different side of Rubel Chowdhury has been revealed. Chowdhury who has lived in Nepal for four years on family visa has many business interests, yet authorities have turned a blind-eye on Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala’s Bangladeshi son-in-law’s alleged involvement in illegal activities here. Requesting anonymity, an official at the Home Ministry said no one wants to investigate Chowdhury’s suspicious activities given his link with Koirala.
A source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Chowdhury could be involved in obtaining illegal Nepali passports for Bangladeshi nationals, some of whom have landed in police net. Chowdhury has violated his terms of visa by engaging in profit-oriented businesses, an official at the Immigration Department said.
Rubel has also clearly misused the United Nations logo in his Bangladesh-based NGO’s website. He has identified himself as “Dr Rubel Chowdhury, Senior Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh-based World Peace and Economic Development Organisation (WPEDO) and his mother-in-law as “Dr. Sujata Koirala, Executive Vice-President of WPEDO.” Chowdhury is also suspected to be involved in the illegal business of International Telephone Call-Bypass through the use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology. Reports said the Police Headquarters traced a VOIP centre near the residence of DPM Koirala at Mandhikhatar and the centre was moved to a different location after Sujata’s sleuths informed that a raid was being carried out.
Police sources claim Chowdhury was the one who made one Nepali Sambhu Bharati a front man to supply logistics and Armed Personnel Carriers to Nepal Police deployed for Sudan-based UNAMID, and misappropriated millions belonging to the Nepal Police Welfare Fund when late Girija Prasad Koirala was the Prime Minister. Government Spokesperson Shankar Pokharel declined to comment on Chowdhury’s case.

God Place

God Place

Lumbini is lod-God buddha birth place. Many of the places that were of importance to the Lord Buddha during his life retain a potent significance to Buddhists of today. Unsurprisingly, nowhere has a greater significance than the site of his birth. In the words of Buddha himself: "O-Bhikshus', after my death when people and members of a new generation come and ask you, then tell them that here the Buddha was born, here he attained the full enlightenment, here he turned the wheel of Dharma twelve times, and here finally the Buddha entered into Parinirvana". Hundreds of years have gone by, but the architectural splendours of that era are still standing and serve as a vivid reminder of the origins of Buddhist philosophy and doctrines. As a complement to the temples and shrines, our aim is to create a living environment in which Buddha would have felt at home during his life.

Lumbini is located in the south-central Terai of Nepal, situated in the foothills of the Himalayas. For millions of Buddhists the world over, it evokes a kind of holy sentiment akin to the significance of Jerusalem to Christians and Mecca to Muslims. Lumbini is the place where Lord Buddha - the apostle of peace, and the Light of Asia - was born in 623 B.C. In historical terms, the region is an exquisite treasure-trove of ancient ruins and antiquities, dating back to the pre-Christian era. The site (Lumbini Grove) was described as a beautiful garden in the Buddha's time and still retains its legendary charm and beauty. Both the Shakyas and Kolias Clans owned the garden and its tranquil environs at the time of Lord Buddha's birth. King Suddhodana, father of Buddha was of the Shakya Dynasty belonging to the Kshatriya or Warrior Caste. For centuries, Buddhists the world over knew that the general area of Lumbini was where the Lord was born. In the words of those famous Chinese pilgrims of antiquity, Huian Tsang and Faeihan, 'Lumbini -where the Lord was born - is a piece of Heaven on Earth, where one could see the snowy mountains amidst a splendid garden, embedded with stupas and monasteries!' However, the exact location remained uncertain and obscure until 1 December 1886 when a wandering German archaeologist Dr. Alois A. Fuhrer came across a stone pillar and ascertained beyond doubt it was indeed the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Since that day it has become a focal point for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.Lumbini is the fourth largest tourist destination in Nepal. Nearly 20,000 tourists visit the area every year (Source: Nepal Tourism Board). Recently, UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site. It has great potential to grow as the major tourist destination in years to come.
